The unyielding spirit...

Life is a mirror, I'm told, of your own very self. Feels very flattering to know that I often meet representatives of the resolute spirit of mankind where ever I go.

My brother, who is much younger, and behaves like my grandpa affirmed the same, when he dragged me amidst the incessant rainfall to catch a morning show of 'Antardwand'...

Directed by Sushil Rajpal, 'Antardwand' highlights the oft heard but unexplored(in Indian cinema) practice of groom kidnapping in Bihar, where the groom is abducted, forced into marriage and kept under house arrest unless/until he succumbs to his "wife" and his new life. Simple narrative, realistic depictions, human and believable characters and competent performances made the experience wonderful. And, the dauntless spirit of Janki, beautifully portrayed by Swati Sen makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Udaan' explores the unbeatable spirit of a adolescent refreshingly portrayed by Rajat Barmecha . Much has been written about this movie... and I even was privy to the self congratulatory cast and crew praising each other on the last screening at a theatre... what touched me most was the portraiture of friendship - closeness to friends one grows up with - most of the time they seem to understand you more than your parents and relatives. And though you may be miles away from them, just a call is enough to connect you back! The most enjoyable part of the movie is of course, Arjun, the protagonist's kid brother who is definitely a true 'kid' in a world of over-grown child actors.

And while we talk about the invincible spirit, can the mumbai autorickshaw drivers stay far behind? Nothing, absolutely nothing can break through their unbeatable spirit of refusing passengers anytime, all the time...

And cynically enough I admire the undaunted spirit of advertising agencies, who bargain and shop for "affordable" candidates...the big ones say they are big so they should not pay, the small ones say they are small so they cannot pay and the medium-sized ones possibly keep thinking...

And that brings me back to where I began...

Will surely catch Antardwand when it's out on dvd. As for companies shopping for affordable candidates, it's their loss really, because in a bid to pinch pennies, they lose out on really good people who would have earned the company much more than they would get with less deserving, but a cheaper workforce.
